The Wabeno American Legion Sylvan Post 44 is an area veteran's service organization whose members are military veterans, their descendants and volunteers who are committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring wholesome programs in their communities. The Sons of the Legion (SAL) are males descendants, adopted, and stepsons of members of the Legion. They are active participants of the Legion and provide support for events. The American Legion Auxiliary supports the Legion and also donates to many local and Veteran organizations.
The Wabeno American Legion donates to the Milwaukee VA Hosp, Iron Mountain VA Hospital, King Veterans Home, Camp American Legion, State Honor Flights, Team Rubicon and local Food Pantry.
The Wabeno Legion's Education Committee awards annual scholarships to students who have been leaders of their peers and in academics. To receive a scholarship, you must have a relative who served or actively serving in the military. The Legion also sends students from Wabeno, Lakewood, Townsend and Laona to Badger Boys State. They also sponsor a flag essay contest at the local high school.
The Legion are active members of their communities, they march in at least six parades in the area throughout the year, they serve in providing Funeral Honors at the request of Veterans' families, they coordinate Memorial Day services annually at the Wabeno American Legion Memorial Park and also hold a Flag Disposal Ceremony at the Park in June.
